Perhaps you have been rolling around the idea of going high definition in your head for some time now but you simply can’t make up your mind if it is actually worth it or not. To start with, it is not something such as food or water that your body actually needs, so you really can do without it quite well if you choose to. On the other hand it does make the time that a person spends watching TV far more enjoyable and if the time that you spend relaxing in front of your TV is important to you, maybe you really do need it but in a different way that you need food or water. One thing that may be standing in your way is that you will need a high definition TV set to receive high definition TV programming. You might be surprised to learn that the price tags on high definition TV sets have fallen dramatically over the last few years and they now cost almost the same as a standard TV set does. Also, because of the precision and clarity of the high definition TV picture that is actually six times as distinct as a standard TV picture, you can new own the big screened TV of your dreams even if you live in an apartment or condo that that leaves you with space limitations. Its a CD quality sound that you have heard before when you watched a movie at your local theater. Remember how you could feel the base notes in your seat and the high notes startled you? High definition TVs have custom speaker systems that were designed to accommodate the new wrap around sound, so it sounds great coming right from the TV set. However if you want to kick it up a notch or two you can run the high sound effects through you stereo speaker system for a full home theater effect right in your living room.

What is High Definition TV and How Does it Work
Ever since the invention of the television set, new technological innovations have changed the way we use it, starting with the advent of color TV. In the beginning a new black and white TV cost about what an average household earned in a month, so comparatively speaking it would be the same as if a small black and white TV cost about three or four thousand dollars today. As these technological innovations have made their appearance, so too has the overall cost of using a TV come down. Then a few decades back video tape made its debut and it wasn’t long before people were running out to buy video tape players to play tapes that could be rented from rental outlets that were springing up in every city and town across the U.S and Canada. High Definition Update: Interview With Paul Wheeler
HIGH DEFINITION UPDATE High Definition Update – Paul Wheeler Interview In July 2005, I wrote an E-Zine with the headline “High Definition When?” At the time we saw little demand for HDCAM equipment aside from some clients in the U.S. Seven months later, the situation has changed dramatically. We added two Sony HDW-F900 HDCAM camcorders (Sony’s top of the line HDCAM camera for television and/or cinema) to our stock in January 2006 because of growing demand and see this as the beginning of a trend. And we have just taken a booking for a multi-camera shoot in March with six HDW-F900s. Interview With Paul Wheeler Soon Available on DVD With this increase in demand, we recently hired Paul Wheeler BSC, a highly experienced film and digital cinematographer who wrote the book, “High Definition & 24P Cinematography”, to run some workshops for us. BBC Drama and High Definition One of my first questions to Paul was about the apparently sudden leap in demand for HDCAM. Paul’s response: “Five years ago the BBC was saying within two years everything they record will be on high definition. Three months ago they said everything we record in two years time will be on high definition so trying to predict what happens is very difficult. The BBC who wanted to move in that direction haven’t moved as fast as they wanted to. But that’s not a technical problem. That’s a problem with persuading producers that using a new technology is safe. And I think this year (2005), we’ve just begun to see the confidence in the system and I’m very hopeful that we’re now going to see a cascade effect. Where a couple of very expensive period dramas have been done on HD, they look exactly like very expensive period dramas. And that to me is a huge starting point that I was hopeful would have happened a couple of years ago.” Sky TV and High Definition Sky TV has also said they are on track with plans to launch HDTV in 2006. BSkyB’s Chief Operating Officer, Richard Freudenstein, said recently that the dramatic improvement in picture quality would help BSkyB achieve its target of ten million customers in 2010. “Innovation and technology leadership are at the core of the Sky brand,” he said. “By introducing HDTV, our ambition is to raise the bar again.” BSkyB expects that sales of “HD Ready” TV sets will accelerate as equipment prices continue to fall and the availability of HDTV programming grows. Nonfiction and High Definition Paul says the increased use of HD in documentary and factual programming has been stronger than in drama. “We have had more factual programmes made in HD than we have had fiction and I think the main drive there is this fact that you can sell it round the world. You can only really sell drama if you’ve made it in England to an English speaking nation but you can change the commentary of factual to any language very easily and I think there is more potential for international sales of documentary work or factual therefore those advantages of the transparency of moving from whatever you’ve shot it in to whatever you want to sell it in are an even bigger advantage.” Sony HVR-Z1 (HDV) vs Digital Betacam The most popular high definition camcorder is the Sony HVR-Z1. This is meant for low budget shoots and the camera has replaced the Sony DSR-PD170P. The main advantage is the Z1 has a wide screen chip so shoots true wide screen. The PD170P does have a wide screen setting but because it has a 4:3 chip this setting produces inferior images to the Z1. Most of our clients record in the DVCAM rather than the HDV setting when they use the Z1 and get excellent results. In some articles I have seen the Z1 compared to the Sony DVW-790WSP camcorder with the conclusion the quality of the image is similar. According to Paul: “If you take the output straight out of the Z-1 and stick it in a decent monitor and do the same on the B-channel with a Digi-Beta and you flick between the two you’ll be fairly impressed. But there are other issues in why you choose a camera. One is the recording format and the Digi-Beta format is much more stable and robust than the M-Peg 2 compression used in the HDV process.” This, Paul says, is particularly a concern in post production, especially if you’re doing a “fair bit of post production.” The other issues to consider are the lens and the actual robustness of the camera. The lens on a Digi-Beta is far more versatile and quicker to respond than the lens on a Z1 and if you are shooting in even slightly adverse conditions the 790 is made of far sterner stuff. Paul’s view is to “think of (the Z1) as a replacement for your PD170 but don’t think of it as a replacement for the highly professional, very robust, very strong recording process of the Digi-Beta. Comparing Satellite and Cable High Definition Options
It seems the perfect storm has arrived in the high definition TV market that means that now more then ever before is the time to think about buying the high definition TV set that you have always dreamed about. Oversupply, dismal Christmas season numbers reported by retailers and a natural drop in electronics prices globally has brought down the cost of high definition TVs in stores across America. Add to that the fact that satellite TV service providers are now building on their high definition programming repertoires at exponential proportions and are now reaching numbers that could only be dreamed about just a few years ago. The result is that now when it comes to comparing satellite and cable high definition programming there simply is no comparison and an analogy would be comparing a golf cart to a Corvette. Cable companies are at a technological disadvantage but that isn’t the only reason that they lag so far behind satellite TV service provider in terms of high definition channels. The other reason is that the thinkers in the cable industry drastically misjudged how far they would end up behind satellite TV service providers and how fast it would happen. Had cable companies invested heavily in research and development aimed at solving their high definition handicap early on, they would now be playing a competitive high definition game. Cable companies strategists figured that while satellite service providers would maintain a certain lead in high definition it would remain marginal at best into the foreseeable future. So, they focused their recourses elsewhere, into areas such as on demand pay per view which they have heavely promoted as the reason to choose cable over satellite. It was a big mistake on their part, because two things have taken place. One of them is that more people went out and bought high definition TV sets than cable companies thought would and the satellite TV service providers have totally blasted past estimates of the number of high definition channels that they would have at this time. It was DirecTV that really pulled a rabbit out of their hat, because after lagging behind Dish Network since the advent of high definition programming, they recently adjusted their high definition channel number to seventy-two. Dish Network at the last count logged in with thirty-eight and they both have notified their viewers that they will be at one -hundred mark very soon. Where does this leave cable service providers? Actually it is good news for them, because the war is over although they have lost. Cable will have great on demand pay per view options but they can never catch up to satellite TV service providers in the arena of high definition. This is not good news for people that can’t get satellite TV such as apartment dwellers and people that are blocked in and can’t get satellite reception. For those who can get satellite TV service it is great news and the news gets even better, because as more and more people request high definition satellite TV, the leading service providers are in hot completion to out do each other in terms of channel numbers.

It was not so many years ago that the viewing public was first notified that a newly upgraded format of TV entertainment was to be making its way into homes everywhere that was called “high definition”. Most people weren’t sure what to expect and all were quite surprised the first time that they saw a high definition picture on a TV set at a friends home or an electronics retailer. Its always best to see it for the first time at an electronics retailer, because they seem to have nature programming playing on all of their TV sets and nature programming is outstanding to view in high definition. High definition programming has been widely accepted by viewers everywhere and in fact a recent survey by the Consumer Electronics Association determined that over 29% of American households now have a high definition TV set in them. Acquiring a high definition TV set is only the first step to enjoying high definition TV programing though, because the next step is to get the programming itself in insufficient quantity, so that it may be enjoyed to its fullest. Satellite TV programming is the only service where you are going to find the large quantity of high definition channels that you need to have a complete selection in your viewing repertoire and this is due to a few reasons. Satellite TV service provider have to adhere to a far more stringent standard because they have to continually compete with cable and standard service as well as entertainment options such as DVDs. This is why while most cable service provider offer only a handful of high definition channels at best, all of the leading satellite TV service provider are quickly closing in on one-hundred channels each. In fact many experts have predicted that in the not too distant future satellite TV programming services may be entirely high definition.

Blu-ray Vs HD DVD format of High Definition DVD Blu ray is one of two most popular high definition DVD format. It uses blue-violet laser for reading and writing data that is why is called Blu ray or BD. On the other hand HD DVD is another most popular High definition DVD format.
