I purchased this Samsung monitor a little more than three months ago. The first time I plugged it in (to a MacBook Pro), it wouldn’t turn on. I tried everything, and just as I was about to pack it back up and return it, it came on. I decided I must have not pushed the plug in all the way or something, and used it quite happily…until today.
Came downstairs this morning and the laptop screen was fine…but the Samsung showed no power at all, not even a light. Tried plugging, unplugging, rebooting the laptop, plugging the monitor into a desktop computer instead…nothing worked.
I went to Samsung’s website and after a lot of convoluted forms was told my model didn’t exist. Moved to the chat help and after a lot of confusion finally was able to open a service request (only to be told my serial number was invalid, which required another 15 minutes of chat to find a DIFFERENT serial number than the one actually on the back of the monitor). Finally entered the request and was told that my monitor was out of warranty and I’d have to pay for repairs myself.
A little web research on c|net and elsewhere showed that Samsung has known about the power problems for more than a year but continues to sell the monitors. Overwhelming complaints on c|net caused Samsung to finally offer to repair the first 50 monitors that presented with the problem…back in 2009. No more repairs after that, you’re on your own. From other gleanings on the web, the problem is most likely due to a bad capacitor/power supply failure combination, and repair charges have been as high as $600.
No thanks, Samsung. I may be out of luck on this monitor–and I’m really steamed that I have spend more money on a second monitor—but you can bet it won’t be a Samsung. Never, ever again.

I purchased this monitor, but soon returned it and replaced it with an HP ZR24W IPS 24″ monitor. The Samsung BX2440X looks nice, and the swivel and height adjustments are great, but the picture is poor. I noticed a good bit of color variation, especially when swiveled to portrait position. Worst of all, the monitor hurts my eyes. Individual pixels are very noticeable, especially with a white background, and the pixels have a slight “glowing” effect that is very noticeable and hard on the eyes.

Overall a nice monitor; solid case, nice ergo, and in my case no dead pixels. A couple problems – one big, one small. First and most importantly there are significant viewing angle limitations. Unless the monitor is more than 3 feet away from you, there exists significant color gradation between the top and bottom of the monitor. This problem is more pronounced in tall mode (only the gradation now goes from left to right). It’s not as bad as the displays on my circa 2002 and 2004 LCDs, but looks quite bad next to the 24′ LED Apple Cinema Display. Of course it’s less than half the price of a Cinema Display so there is that. The minor problem is that the placement of the power cord is such that you need to unplug it from the back of the monitor in order to rotate it between portrait and landscape. Not a big deal really, but I found it an odd design misstep. For the price I think it’s a pretty nice monitor, but if I had to do it all over again I probably would have picked something else.

I purchased two of these monitors to sit side-by-side on my work desk. I do graphic design so color is important to me. I have always been please with my previous Samsung monitors but these are a true let down. The brightness of the screen is higher at the bottom than it is at the top of the scree. This results in colors shifting to lighter lower on the screen. This is a HUGE manufacturing/design fault. Both of these monitors are being returned ASAP. Oh, and yes, BOTH monitors exhibit the same issue regardless of whether they are connected via VGA or DVI.
